I only had 2 days in Amsterdam, so I'll wrap it up quickly here with some easy tips.

I bought a 3 day travel ticket at the airport which will include the express airport train and all the trams and buses inside the city for a reasonable price.
So you can try it.
My hotel was Amsterdam Weichmann Hotel, great location, very helpful staff and a delicious breakfast. So I would definitely recommend. You can check the hotel from here.
The neighbourhoods that you should visit are,

The 9 Streets
Vondelpark
and of course the famous
Red Light District
